The word kohaku means "red and white" in Japanese. Kohaku is considered one of the most popular Koi varieties and is part of the along with the Sanke and Showa. Kohaku are believed to be one of the first Koi variety ever developed.

This particular Koi is comes from the famous Marudo farms in Japan. The pattern is a "Maruten", meaning it has a uniform deep red Tancho-like spot on it's head as well as other red patterns on the body. The appearance of the red is a called a Sandan or a 3-step pattern.

The beni (red) kiwa (the border between the red and white) is very well defined. You can also see that the developing beni on the other side which will improve the symmetrical appearance of the pattern on this Koi's body.  The Koi looks a bit metallic and a few scales glitter (ginrin)  and this is still developing. This Koi is a simple beauty now and will most likely grow in to a very attractive Koi in your pond.
